Is this trip right for my surf level?
- Rote and West Timor offer a range of waves, but this trip is best suited to surfers with at least some ocean experience who can comfortably paddle out, catch unbroken waves, and handle themselves in varying conditions. Our guides match you with suitable breaks based on ability and the day's conditions, though some of the region's most renowned waves are powerful and reef-based, so complete beginners may find it challenging. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll help you find the right fit.
What are the waves like?
- Rote and West Timor are home to some of Indonesia's most consistent, uncrowded waves, a mix of reef breaks, points, and playful setups ranging from user-friendly to powerful depending on swell. With access to multiple surf zones, we chase the best conditions available for the group. Expect long rides, warm water, and a side of Indonesia many travelling surfers overlook.
What boards should I bring?
- We recommend bringing two boards: a reliable everyday board and a second suited to either smaller or more powerful surf, with a versatile shortboard, step-up, fish, or mid-length combination covering most conditions for intermediate and advanced surfers. Hire equipment can be arranged, though availability is more limited than in major surf destinations, so advance notice is essential. We'll send destination-specific recommendations once you've booked.
Not sure what to bring? Just ask. We'll help you dial in the right equipment before the trip so you can focus on the adventure, not the logistics.
What's included in the price?
- We believe great adventures should be straightforward. That's why we include as much as possible in the trip cost, typically accommodation, local transport, surf guiding, selected activities, and on-the-ground support, along with pre-trip planning assistance. Flights, travel insurance, personal expenses, optional activities, and equipment hire may not be included unless stated on the trip page, and every expedition comes with a clear list of inclusions and exclusions.
What's NOT included in the price?
- Unless stated otherwise: international/domestic flights, travel insurance (required for all participants), visa and entry costs, meals/drinks not listed in the itinerary, personal spending money, surfboard hire, optional activities outside the itinerary, and airport transfers outside the designated windows. We can help arrange flights through our ATOL-protected flight partners.
Do I need a visa?
- Visa requirements depend on your nationality, and it's your responsibility to have the correct documentation, we'll point you to the relevant government resources and can help clarify what's needed, but check entry requirements as early as possible since rules can change.
Are flights included?
- No, flights aren't included, giving you flexibility over departure airport, airline, and schedule. We can help source flights through our ATOL-protected partners, and we'll provide recommended arrival/departure times once you've booked.
What airport should I fly to?
- David Constantijn Saudale Airport on Rote Island. Most international travellers first fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport before connecting through El Tari Airport and onward to Rote. It sounds complicated, but we'll provide detailed travel guidance before departure and can help source flights through our ATOL-protected partners if needed.
What accommodation is provided?
- You'll spend the week at a beachfront resort overlooking the legendary T-Land point break, with local boat operators just a two-minute walk away for quick access to the lineup and surrounding reefs. Staying in one location gives you the freedom to settle into island life and spend more time in the water, with tropical surroundings, ocean views, and the slower pace that makes Rote unlike anywhere else.
What makes this destination special?
- Perched on the southern edge of Indonesia, Rote feels like a world apart, days begin with views of the legendary T-Land point break, followed by boat rides to crystal-clear lineups and some of the longest waves in Indonesia. Unlike many of the country's better-known surf destinations, Rote has retained a genuine sense of remoteness and authenticity, the kind of place that feels like you've found it before the rest of the world catches on.
Can I travel solo?
- Yes, many guests join solo. Trips are designed to bring like-minded travellers together through shared surf sessions, meals, and downtime, so you'll quickly become part of the group regardless of how you arrive.
